Denton
A courthouse square, two universities, and a music scene with real roots.
Denton anchors the north end of the metro, where I-35 splits into its east and west branches. It is a genuine university town: the University of North Texas and Texas Woman's University together bring tens of thousands of students, a deep arts culture, and the kind of independent restaurants and venues that grow up around them.
The historic courthouse-on-the-square is the center of gravity, ringed by shops, coffee houses, and stages. Denton's live music tradition runs decades deep, from the square's festivals to UNT's renowned jazz program.
Housing spreads from historic neighborhoods near the square and the universities to established suburbs and fast-growing new construction on the city's south and west sides, where Denton meets the metro's northward push.
